Implants

Dental implants are the most recent option to replace lost teeth or to secure a loose fitting denture. A dental implant is just like having a natural tooth with a root "implanted" into the bone that is made of titanium. The implant is then covered with a crown that will result in a beautiful, more natural tooth replacement.

Implants can replace a single teeth or multiple teeth that have been lost. The  implant-supported bridge is ideal in situations where there is more than one missing tooth in an area of the mouth.

The implant -supported removable denture secures a solid fit as it prevents a denture from easily dislodging.  Usually three or more  implants are placed in the mouth and a denture is then fabricated to clip onto the implants.

Implant As a Treatment Option

If an implant is part of your treatment plan, you will be referred to one of the many specialists we work with to have the implant surgically placed into the bone of your jaw. Depending on if it is the upper or lower jaw and the density of your bone,  a period of time will need to pass while the bone integrates around the newly placed implant. This healing can take from several weeks to many months.

While healing most implants remain buried underneath the gum tissue.  A second, very simple sugical procedure is needed to uncover this implant and a healing cap is then place over the implant.  With some brands of implants this step is not necessary.

Once the healing cap has been placed, you will come to our office where you will be fitted for an abutment and crown, two separate pieces that fit into the implant. This requires two appointments, one for the impressions that are sent to the dental lab, and a second one, two to three  weeks later  for the seating of the abutment and crown.

The process is long and involved but well worth having a tooth that functions as a single tooth without changing the teeth on either side as with a traditional fixed bridge.  The end result is amazing and well appreciated.
